Twelve years ago, I remember meeting a little boy named Angel who had spent half of his life in foster care, moving from one foster home to anther: six in six years. He had a wonderful little smile and more confidence than one would expect from a child who came from a background of abuse and neglect. I found out later why he had such a sense of loss. When the state stepped in and removed him from his birth family, they also took his two sisters and one-month only brother. At the time the children were 6, 3, 1 and a newborn baby and they were placed with separate foster families. Angel was six and the oldest and he continued to worry what had happened to his two sisters and baby brother. When I talked with him on Wednesday's child six years later I asked him what he wanted to do when he grew up. He said he wanted to be a doctor or therapist because he wanted to help others. Watching that night was a wonderful lady who worked for the US Attorney's office. Mary Beth Carmody fell in love with this little boy, and in little less than a year, he was legally her son. He wanted to change his name and his name now is Luis Carmody, and he graduated in May of 2004 from Curry College. I gave the commencement speech that day, was given an honorary doctorate degree and had the privilege of giving Luis his degree. Mary Beth like so many others voluntarily stepped in to make a difference. It wasn't always easy. But she and Luis persevered. People often praise me for creating Wednesday's Child and raising lots of money to help special needs adoption. I remind them that I am no hero. But I have met them. Mary Beth Carmody is one example.
