Jack Williams - Commentary

How do you react, other than disgust to the report from the attorney general on church sexual abuse? We knew the results would be bad-but, even so, the depth of depravity and the callousness of church leaders were enough to make you sick.

But I would question the AG's statement that is the greatest tragedy to befall children ever in Massachusetts. Unfortunately-child sexual abuse is not limited to priests. In fact, most attacks are by family members or close family friends. It is society's dirty little secret. And most of these criminals will escape any prosecution.

I remember one little girl who appeared on Wednesday's Child years ago who had been sexually abused by her father. She was then handed off to her uncles and then to friends and acquaintances. All of this was before she was nine. No one was ever prosecuted, even though authorities became aware of the abuse and put her in state care. But nothing was done against the perverts who had attacked her. Not even after her father used to hang around the schoolyard and try to entice her to come with him.

No, priests don't have the corner on pedophilia. And it's time the attorney general take the next step to protect our children.
